Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, has confirmed that Charlie Cox will reprise his role as Daredevil in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Certain actors have become synonymous with the Marvel character they were cast to play over the years. Tony Stark is played by Robert Downey Jr. Steve Rogers’ fabric has been claimed by Chris Evans. Some roles can be recast, such as Edward Norton handing over Hulk to Mark Ruffalo or Don Cheadle taking over for Terrence Howard. However, many people stake their claim to their persona, and that is final. This is how many Marvel Cinematic Universe fans feel about Charlie Cox’s portrayal of blind attorney Matt Murdock, aka Daredevil. There have been calls to bring Cox over to the MCU and keep him as the Man Without Fear… and it appears that Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has been paying attention.
Cox portrayed the superhero, Matt Murdock, on Netflix’s Daredevil from 2015 to 2018, and he reprised his role for the sister series The Defenders. Since the end of Daredevil in 2018, fans have been unsure whether Cox would have a future in the MCU. Now, Feige has put fans at ease by reassuring them of the character’s continuity in casting. Feige confirmed the news in a recent interview with CinemaBlend.
When it comes to a concrete timeline for the future of Daredevil, Kevin Feige kept some cards close to his vest, but those who loved Charlie Cox’s portrayal of the character can rejoice in knowing that he will return to Hell’s Kitchen at some point and patrol the streets on behalf of the neighborhood’s citizens. And, given the number of shows in the works, bringing Daredevil over makes more sense now than it did when the Netflix show ran its course.
Where the Daredevil fits in MCU
If Marvel Studios only wanted to explore Matt Murdock’s legal aspects, who is as powerful in a courtroom as he is in a darkened alley, then Daredevil could be a natural fit on She-Hulk, another Disney+ show in the works that will introduce audiences to Jennifer Walters (Tatiyana Maslany), yet another superpowered citizen who practices law. Why was this a common occurrence at Marvel Comics over the years?
Charlie Cox’s portrayal of Matt Murdock and Daredevil was a huge hit with Marvel fans and marked a significant improvement over Ben Affleck’s efforts in a doomed Daredevil film that starred MCU rock star Jon Favreau as Foggy Nelson. We’ll see how many Netflix characters follow Charlie Cox to the MCU if and when he appears, but according to Kevin Feige, it’s happening, and we know fans will be extremely happy.
