Preparatory matches for the T20 World Cup are typically played between teams that are unlikely to face each other before the knockout stage. That was true until 11 days ago when Bangladesh and Sri Lanka played a friendly match. Neither team expected to see each other again so soon. However, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are now in the same Super Twelve group after losing to Bangladesh due to the birth of unfortunate against Scotland and the ICC changing its rules in the middle of the tournament.
To advance from this group, both teams will face a difficult test, as this group includes strong teams such as Australia, England, South Africa, and the West Indies, none of whom have played in the first round of the T20 World Cup.
Areas to improve
Both Sri Lanka and Bangladesh have had issues with their top-orders and have relied far too heavily on their quality bowling attacks. From July 2019 until the start of this tournament, Bangladesh has been the slowest scoring side in Powerplay overs. In the first six games of Round 1, they had scores of 25/2, 29/2, and 45/1, with a run-rate of 5.50. In the same stage, Sri Lanka’s top three averaged 15.87, and since 2019, their top three have the lowest average and strike rate among all member countries. Their bowlers, on the other hand, took all 30 wickets on offer in just 48 overs, conceding only 241 runs in the Group stage.
T20 World Cup: Team News
Bangladesh has most likely settled on their best XI for the time being, though they may want to consider including Nasum Ahmed if they believe the Sharjah pitch will be favorable to spinners.
Possible XI: 1 Mohammad Naim, 2 Liton Das, 3 Shakib Al Hasan, 4 Mushfiqur Rahim, 5 Mahmudullah (capt), 6 Afif Hossain, 7 Nurul Hasan (wk), 8 Mahedi Hasan, 9 Mohammad Saifuddin, 10 Taskin Ahmed, 11 Mustafizur Rahman
Sri Lanka is awaiting the return of Theekshana, who injured his side in the match against the Netherlands. If he is unable to play, offspinner Akila Dananjaya will most likely replace him.
